Narrator
2011

Narrator explores the democratic intention of user-generated content. Three editors work with user-generated content to represent the build-up to the AV referendum. Everyone will get a chance to have their say online, however will this be reflected in the outcome of the referendum and in the editors decisions.

User-generated content eliminates the middleman by allowing subjects access to cameras and the ability to produce their own footage. Incorporating many different voices through user-generated content in documentary film seems to be the digital age’s response to Jean Rouch’s concern in the 1950’s of greater participation by the ethnographic other. User-generated content provides points-of-view previously unavailable to the documentary filmmaker, however is the originally democratic intent of user-generated content is ultimately usurped by the point of view of the editor?
